Professional Competencies

With my education from McGill and background in psychology I approach my professional skills, experience and areas of study in graduate school with confidence in my abilities and understandings of my limits.

Marketing/Advertising:
As a member of the Chabad McGill board, Hillel executive board, Mcgill Students for Israel and McGill GetFit Club, I constantly market and advertise events, membership and table for these clubs. I use social media to reach out to the Montreal community and let them know about the opportunities my clubs currently offer. Below are photos of my poster I created for GetFit McGill and of me and a peer volunteering at the McGill Activities Night to talk to students about our club and to sign up for our events.

Technology Skills:
My computer competencies include; Microsoft Office, SPSS Statistics Software, Social Media such for Advertising and Marketing, and all the Operating System Basics for Mac computers. Social Media websites include blogs, twitter, Facebook, Instagram. I am currently the administrator of McGill Students for Israel page on Facebook and am responsible for posting relevant articles and updates about the club and Israel. Below is a picture of what I manage on Facebook as well as a photo on  a sample statistics project that is similar to what I do at my internship.
Research and Development:
I currently intern at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute affiliated with McGill University.  Within the child psychiatry program, I have been working with researchers investigating the diagnosis and treatment of children with ADHD. This program encompasses all factors in the diagnosis including researching brain structure, neurotransmitters and executive functions that are related to the disorder. Particularly within my unit, I am working with researchers exploring individual treatment of a cohort of Quebec students, delving into a combination of counseling and medication. Since September, I have been administering data into SPSS Statistics program to see the effects of ADHD children's medication and or placebo on delayed gratification throughout their childhood and adolescent years. At the end of the year I will be writing a paper on my findings. Having the opportunity to be in a research-oriented environment has further influenced me to pursue my own research in treatment of developmental psychopathology.

Areas of Study:
I will be graduating this year in Psychology with minors in Behavioral Science and History. With my degree I have hopes to get into graduate school in either Quebec, Florida or New York and complete a masters in Mental Health Counseling. After my masters I want to complete a PhD and become a licensed Psychologist in Florida. My goal is to incorporate what I have learned of developmental psychopathology at McGill to become a dynamic, holistic and have a biologically-based approach to treating children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder comorbid with Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Anxiety Disorders. I want to also use therapy to treat surrounding family of my patients to help change lives for the children. My goal is to work with parents to teach them strategies to implement with their children to encourage healthy living and understanding of their child's difficulties in education and family life. Beyond that I hope to administer tests to diagnose children if they have a mental disorder or learning disability. The tests will include Stanford- Binet Intelligence Test, Raven's Progressive Matrices, Wasserman Test, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, etc.

Significant Experience:
My summer abroad at Hebrew University has lead me to have a much better understanding of children and adolescence with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The particular program consisted of learning theory and practice of the latest developments in trauma and resilience. I learned the consequences of trauma, healthy and unhealthy coping processes, pathological significance as well as risks of developing PTSD, related distress and potential protective factors that follow throughout a persons’ lifetime.  The additional topics included military trauma, medical distress, and building resilience in the wake of trauma and war, trauma of immigration, especially within the Ethiopian community of Israel as well as vicarious trauma. What hit me as most interesting was our hands-on experience with traveling to cities to learn about the disadvantages of children in a war-town environment. Throughout these field trips, I was exposed to the drawback of living in a city that has been bombed and have studied the coping strategies that clinicians have implemented within these families to try and prevent emotional trauma. Additionally, our class visited a treatment center for children with physical and mental disabilities who cannot solely be helped by their family. It was an eye- opening experience that attracted me to pursuing a career in understanding and treating children and adults with disabilities.
